Climate is the single biggest driver of siding failure. Every material has a different tolerance for moisture cycling, UV exposure, and temperature swings, so this answer carries the most weight in the scoring.
Cold winters with freeze-thaw cycles
Repeated freezing and thawing is hard on anything that absorbs water, because trapped moisture expands as it freezes and can crack or delaminate the material. Fiber cement and quality engineered wood are manufactured to resist this kind of moisture cycling, and metal siding doesn’t absorb water at all. Vinyl loses points here, since it can turn brittle and crack in sustained cold.
Hot, intense sun most of the year
